About Us:
Surefoot Shepherds is located in the Northwest region of Minnesota, USA. We have occasional pups available for purchase to select homes. We feature two kinds of herding dogs in our home that are considered rare breeds; Shiloh Shepherds and North American Shepherds, aka Miniature Australian Shepherds. Our dogs live with us in our home. We have five children ages 19 to 5 so they are completely socialized before they go to their foreverhomes.
The Shiloh Shepherd is a large even-tempered and intelligent dog that is was breed from large European German Shepherds and crossed with a Malamute. The breed was started by Shiloh Kennels of New York and other East Coast breeders in the 1980’s and was recognized as a rare breed in 1992. Shiloh Shepherds are excellent pets, guardians, service dogs, search and rescue, agility and herding. Because their temperament is considered too soft, they are not recommended for Law Enforcement. At Surefoot Shepherds we breed for temperament as well as health.
The North American Shepherd was a breed that showed up in the American west, used mainly by ranchers and cowboys bringing herds of livestock to rail lines. The North American Shepherd (aka Mini Aussie) was considered a saddle dog, riding on top of the horse with the rider then used to chase rabbits or other small animals and to help herd livestock with the larger Australian Shepherd. Mini Aussies are an agile, lively dog that can excel in agility and the show ring. They make excellent pets that love to be a part of the family! Our breeding program for the mini Aussie’s is a sound healthy body, stable temperament and beautiful coloring.
